A Turbo Timer is an electronic timer that calculates the amount of time necessary for the car's engine to remain running so that the turbocharger can cool. This cool-down period is required by the turbo to ensure that it does not experiece premature failure caused by a phenomenon called oil coking.

Turbochargers use oil to keep themselves cool. While the engine oil is typically several hundred degrees farenheit, the turbocharger itself can be over one thousand degrees farenheit when the engine is under load. That temperature is not a problem as long as it is restricted to the exhaust portion of the turbo. If the bearings of the turbocharger are allowed to get this hot, they will typically fail.

When a turbocharged car sits idling, the temperature of the hottest part of the turbocharger begins to stabilize to a temperature that is not typically damaging to the bearings. At that point, the engine can safely be turned off. If the car is immediately turned off after experiencing a load, the heat from the exhaust manifold will coke (think "cook") the oil on the bearings. Oil that was thin and fluid becomes sticky and crusty. Once restarted, the bearings to not roll properly, but slide along in a high-friction manner, grinding then to oblivion.

Blitz Turbo Timers work by carefully monitoring the load experienced by the turbo. Then, when the key is removed from the ignition, it notes that event and, rather than allowing the engine to shut off, keeps the engine idling for the amount of time necessary for the turbo temperature to stabilize.

Blitz® offers two different styles of turbo timer:
